It took all of a week for the first lawsuit to be filed against South Carolina for the new ‘I Believe’ license plate. The Americans United for Separation of Church and State has filed a lawsuit, saying that the allowing of the license plate gave favorable treatment to Christianity. The suit was filed on behalf or a rabbi, the Hindu American Association, and three local pastors.
We have had problems with the license from the start. The plates were unnecessary and were lawsuits waiting to happen from the start. Faith is important to many people, but is it really necessary to advertise your beliefs on your license plate? Many different religions make up the population of our state, why are we only promoting one? You can put a bumper sticker on your car that can say anything you want, which would be protected by the first amendment. The state sanctioning these license plates does favor one religion over another and we think this lawsuit and the many more that will follow will stop the license plate from being produced. This is a fight that is not worth fighting. Do you want your tax dollars being spent to fight for a license plate?

if you don’t like it then don’t buy one. our nation was found on christian beliefs and we have the right to express that.

This license plate is not worth all the trouble that it is going to cause. This is a loosing battle, let the special interest groups who pushed for the plate foot the legal bills if they want to fight it.

i agree, the license plates were a good idea if we could have gotten away with them. i do not think they are now worth all of the trouble they are causing.

The state should stand up for their decisions. The state should not let special interests decide what they can and cannot do.

the legislature needs to show some backbone and fight the special interests. They passed the bill, they better fight for it.
